Our Heritage

Wards Through the Decades

From humble beginnings to world-leading Marine Electrical Provider

1950

Founding of Wards

In 1950, Ward's Marine Electric was founded, with Ward Eshleman Sr. assuming the role of president and owner. The company leased its first business property in downtown Fort Lauderdale, marking the beginning of its journey.

1960

Expanding Services

The 1960s saw the establishment of the engineering department, and Ward's played a crucial role as a founding member of the Marine Industry of South Florida. Ward Sr. conducted the first corrosion survey, and the company went a step further by purchasing and operating an airplane to provide service to boats in the Bahamas.

1970

The Team Grows

The 1970s witnessed significant developments, including the entry of Ward Eshleman Jr. into the company, the establishment of the engraving department, and a notable increase in the number of employees to 10.

1980

Passing the Torch

In the 1980s, Ward Jr. assumed the presidency and ownership of the company, and a company softball team was created to foster camaraderie among employees. The adoption of the first computers in sales, accounting, and inventory systems marked a technological leap for the company. Ward Jr. made significant contributions by joining the board of directors for MIASF and becoming a member of the ABYC electrical committee.

1990

Growth & Innovation

The 1990s marked a period of substantial growth and innovation, with the construction of the first free-standing switchboard, the expansion of the company's building, and the publication of the first parts catalog. The advent of the company's first website and the introduction of cell phones for all employees further reflected the company's commitment to technological advancement. During this period, the ABYC pilot program was established, coinciding with a significant growth in the company's workforce, which surged to 25 employees.

2000

Expanding Locations

In the 2000s, Ward's Marine Electric underwent expansion and modernization, constructing a new headquarters and establishing a second location in Riviera Beach. Introducing a paint department further diversified the company's offerings, and the number of employees grew to 50.

2010

World-renowned Reputation

By 2010, Ward's had solidified its position as the most significant worldwide distributor for numerous manufacturers. The company's prowess was further underscored by the award of its first USCG contract for the 378 series cutters, which lasted three years. The company secured a significant Navy contract for INLS vessels, which remains active today.

2020

Continuing a Legacy

In 2020, Ward's commemorated its 70th anniversary, marking seven decades of distinguished performance and forward-thinking initiatives. Ward Jr. assumed the position of Chairman of the ABYC, while the company reinforced its footprint by inaugurating a third establishment at Rybovich Safe Harbor in Riviera Beach. Kristina Hebert was appointed as President, and Ward Jr. undertook the esteemed role of Chairman of the Board. The company's commitment to advancing technology was demonstrated by introducing the Hubbell Smart-Pedestal, showing its dedication to modern solutions.

2024

75th Anniversary

Wards Marine Electric is gearing up to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2025. To mark this significant milestone, we are launching a series of celebratory initiatives, including a brand refresh, updates to the website and social media, expansion of several departments, and much more. Stay tuned as we celebrate not just an anniversary, but the many years of Wards Marine Electric. This is just the beginning of our journey.
